Park off the road at the lochside just east of the site.
Robert
the Bruce was sheltering in the area when the MacDougall Clan,
his firm enemies, attacked Rannoch. The MacDougalls were defeated
by a local hero, Duncan Reamhar, and their leader was imprisoned
in the island fortress Eilean
nam Faoileag (Island of the Gulls). He managed to escape by
tricking his captors, and he landed at this point, now called
MacDougall’s Rock.
The
island is a crannog, an artificial island, to which a causeway
was constructed from this shore so that it was just under the
surface of the water, and its route was irregular as a guard against
unwanted intruders.
